Allocation is division with witnesses
Allocated cost is where department trust goes to die: a number arrives by formula nobody can see. This page runs one real allocation in the open, pool to rate to rows, exact at every step, and names the two ways runs actually fail.
◆ May facilities, allocated402,760.00 at exactly 8.00 per square foot.
| Cost center | Square feet | Rate | Allocated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | 20,510 | 8.00 | 164,080.00 |
| Technology Delivery | 16,065 | 8.00 | 128,520.00 |
| Support | 13,770 | 8.00 | 110,160.00 |
| Facilities pool | 50,345 | 402,760.00 |
The pool is the same 402,760.00 facilities row the trial balance carries; the rate is the pool over the measured square feet, landing exactly. Every row is driver times rate, and a department that doubts its share can check it in one multiplication. Sample values are illustrative, never client data.
◆ Where allocation runs go wrongscale, and drivers nobody measured.
Workday’s own guidance flags allocations past 50,000 result lines as a performance risk worth splitting, which is what happens when per-worker drivers meet monthly runs. The quieter failure is the driver itself: a split negotiated once in a meeting and never re-measured allocates this year’s cost by last year’s politics.
◆ The owned answerruns as facts, replayable.
Each run lands as rows on the GL star: pool, driver value, rate, result, dated. Replaying a month is a query, drivers get re-measured because they are visible, and the allocation pipe count ties each run to its journals.
- GL
- General ledger, the books this module lands and proves.
- allocation pool
- The cost being spread; here the facilities row.
- driver
- The measured quantity the spread follows.
- rate
- Pool over total driver; one number, exact.
- result line
- One cost center’s share: driver times rate.
- black-box run
- An allocation nobody can replay; the anti-pattern.
