What came back, and what it cost
A return runs the whole flow backwards, and every skipped step is exposure. May accepted seven return orders for 31 units, credited 9,840.00 through memos that know their invoices, and measured the window where refunds outran the goods.
◆ May returnsseven orders, referenced credits.
| Returns, May 2026 | Count |
|---|---|
| Return orders accepted | 7 |
| Units expected back | 31 |
| Credit memos issued, referenced | 3 |
| Credited, May | 9,840.00 |
The three memos are inside the register’s credit column: 9,840.00 of its 21,300.00, each referencing its original invoice so margin analysis survives. The materials module meets the goods on the dock when they arrive. Sample values are illustrative, never client data.
◆ The unreferenced creditmargin analysis’s quiet killer.
A credit memo created without reference to the original invoice erases the link between the refund and the sale, and practitioners report margin-by-customer rotting exactly this way. The rule is structural: no reference, no posting, exceptions signed.
◆ Credit first, goods laterthe exposure window.
When the memo posts before the return arrives, the customer holds both goods and refund until the dock scan. Sometimes commercially right, and always worth a number: the open window, valued, aged, by customer.
